10 New York Hotel Rooms for 1,000 Points Each with Stash Rewards
Stash Hotel Rewards is a loyalty points program shared by nearly 200 independent who have banded together to offer savvy travelers the value of accruing loyalty points while still providing a boutique hotel experience. Stash is hosting a summer promo where it will be offering 10 rooms at one of the New York City Stash partner hotels listed below for only 1,000 Stash points per room.
My Stash sources aren’t revealing which partner hotel will be hosting the special hotels yet, but the official announcement will happen in the next several days via Stash’s Facebook and Twitter feeds, on which they’ll provide directions on how members can redeem 1,000 points for a free night. The offer is limited to 10 rooms, first-come-first-served. Limit one room per member, and rooms are not transferable. Stay dates are in the month of August 2012 and are subject to availability. If you’re not a Stash Rewards member yet, the good news is that when you join through my link, you will automatically be awarded 1,000 points – enough to score one of those rooms.
Starwood 20% Discount on Purchased SPG Points
Update: The 30,000-point bonus is no longer available. The bonus is now 25,000 points for the Starwood Amex business and personal cards.
Starwood Preferred Guest is currently extending a discount on purchased SPG points now through August 31, SPG points can be bought for a 20% discount which brings the price down from $35 for 1,000 points to $28 per 1,000 SPG points. After the purchase, it takes up to 24 hours for the SPG points to be deposited into your account. SPG points can be purchased in 500-point increments with a limit of 20,000 points every calendar year.
You must have had a SPG account open for at least 14 days before you are can buy SPG points so if you don’t have an account and plan on buying points, sign up for one now. Also, your account may receive up to a maximum of 20,000 Starpoints per account per calendar year, whether purchased by yourself or received as a gift from another member. However, you may purchase as many Starpoints as desired as gifts for other accounts. Each gift recipient can receive up to 20,000 Starpoints per calendar year.
While I rarely advocate buying points as it’s usually not a good value. For instance, if you were to try to book a room at the W San Diego (pictured above) in August, you could find a nightly rate of about $229 a night, whereas buying the 10,000 points you would need for a free night redemption would cost $280. However, the Westin Gaslamp (also in San Diego) is running at around $299, but since it’s also a category 4 hotel requiring 10,000 points for a free night stay, you’d be saving $18 by buying the points necessary for a redemption.
Or, for instance, TPG Managing Editor Eric’s stay at the Westin Paris in May cost him 8,000 Starpoints + $150 in cash. Because room rates were nearly $500 at the time, those 8,000 Starpoints saved him $340 and the points he used ended up being worth about 4.25 cents each, far above the value this promo is offering them at. If he had purchased those Starpoints with this promo they would have cost him a total of $224, still saving him $116.
As always, crunch the numbers and see if they make sense for you and your particular situation. If you have a particular award stay you’re hoping to top up for at a top property where room rates tend to run high but award space is still available, it could be worth it to buy a few extra Starpoints with this discount.
2,000 HawaiianMiles Netflix Offer
Netflix runs some decent sign-up bonuses and they generally don’t require contracts, so you can pay $7.99 for one month of service, get the bonus, and then cancel your subscription. Netflix is offering 2,000 HawaiianMiles for customers who sign up through this link. Technically, this is for new customers only, but as long as you use a different address, email, and credit card, you should be able to take advantage of this promotion since Netflix doesn’t require a social security number. The $7.99 membership is for online content only, so you don’t even have to worry about getting DVD’s sent to you. You simply pay the first month and cancel before the next month bills. There is nothing in the T&C stating you need to be a member for a certain amount of time. Hat Tip: Frugal Travel Guy.

Your $75 Vacation Pay Prepaid MasterCard should arrive within 6-8 weeks. If you have some weekend trips planned in the coming weeks, might as well stay at an IHG property and get $75 in the bargain, especially since if you stay at some of the more inexpensive brands like Holiday Inn Express or Candlewood Suites, you could be earning a significant percentage back on your rate.
For instance an upcoming night at the Holiday Inn Express Ft. Lauderdale – Plantation is going for just $75 a night, so if you were headed there and booked this with the promo, you would basically be getting a night for free.
