Update: It looks like fares have risen to around $298 on this route now on USAirways.com and the OTA’s – still better than average but not the best deal.

I fly between the coasts often and I’ve seen airfare shoot up into the $300+ range and often skyrocketing to well over $500 for last minute purchases. Today US Airways filed fares at $238 total roundtrip for many dates in October, November and December. US Airways doesn’t fly this route so the actual flights are on United- so if you’re looking to travel between coasts (you can originate in either New York or Los Angeles) and also top up your Star Alliance elite status, these may be worthwhile.

The fares are bookable at USairways.com or most online travel agencies like Travelocity.com (so you can book through portals for extra points/cash back). You can use the ITA Matrix to search flexible dates by month and then book through your site of choice. JFK-LAX is 4,950 miles roundtrip, so you’re looking at 4.8 cents per mile- not the best mileage run per se, but a great fare. The same exact flights are selling on United.com for $308, so you’re saving $70 by booking the US Airways codeshare. Not bad!

These fares also price out as one-ways as well:

United operates their p.s. 757 planes on this route. The non-refurbished planes (which still have a First class) have only Economy Plus seats with 34 inches of pitch. The refurbished planes with flat-beds have Economy Plus (for sale and free to elites) that have 36″ of pitch. The regular economy seats offer 31″ of pitches. All seats feature in-seat entertainment and WiFi is available for purchase on most flights.

Low fares are also available to/from Washington DC starting at $250 roundtrip, and even Richmond starting at about $330 roundtrip.
