Starwood allows SPG members to redeem their Starpoints for concerts, sporting events, and other experiences through SPG Moments and the program has launched some new SPG Moment packages in partnership with Madison Square Garden. Although I usually prefer to redeem my Starwood points for hotel stays since you can get some amazing values across the chain’s various tiers of hotels whereas the per-point monetary value on these packages can be a bit lower, there are still some fun ones in here with unique experiences included that you could consider redeeming for if you prefer to use your Starpoints that way.
There are 114 packages currently being offered including Knicks games, Rangers games, concerts and special events, and you can browse them by type of event, and whether the redemption options are fixed-value or auction (where you can get some deals if bidding doesn’t get too heated. Here are some of the redemptions currently being offered:
New York Knicks Preseason Basketball: New York Knicks vs. Charlotte Bobcats
10/25/2013: Package includes complimentary food and beverages and a pair of reserved VIP seats. Package includes access for 2 guests and two reserved seats in an Event Level Suite seating section.
Cost: 10,000 Starpoints, 6 packages available
While there are currently no Event Level seats available for purchase through TicketMaster to this game, tickets for seats in nearby sections are going for anywhere from $150-$300 depending on the vantage point, so your 10,000 points is getting you about $300 in value, about 3 cents per point, and not a bad redemption at all.
New York Rangers vs. LA Kings
11/17/2013: Package includes Access for two (2) to the SPG Luxury Suite at Madison Square Garden on 11/17/2013, Complimentary food and beverages while in the suite, Two (2) reserved seats in the Event Level Suite seating section
Cost: 25,000 Starpoints, 6 packages available
Comparable tickets are going for about $150, so your SPG points would be worth about 1.2 cents apiece on this redemption.
Kanye West Concert
11/23/2013 – 11/24/2013:
Package includes: Access for two (2) to the SPG Luxury Suite at Madison Square Garden on 11/23/2013, complimentary food and beverages while in the suite, Two (2) reserved seats in the Event Level Suite seating section
Cost: 35,000 Starpoints, 5 packages available
Comparable tickets are going for about $110-$185, so at most you’re getting about 1 cent per point, so I’d think about just buying tickets at that price.
Elton John Concert
12/4/2013 (Dec. 3 event is already sold out)
Package includes: Access for two (2) to the SPG Luxury Suite at Madison Square Garden on 12/4/2013, Complimentary food and beverages while in the suite, Two (2) reserved seats in the Event Level Suite seating section
Cost: 35,000 Starpoints, 4 packages available
Comparable tickets are going for $95-$200, so you’d be getting about 1.1 cents per point in value here at best.
That’s just four events that looked interesting to me, though as I said, there are over 100 that are part of this program. However, some are selling out quickly, especially the Rangers hockey games and certain concerts like the Kanye and Elton John ones, and there are only limited numbers of packages, so if you are interested, I would suggest looking now to see which events you would like to redeem for.
While I’ll personally be holding onto my Starpoints for some high-value hotel redemptions in Europe later this year, if you find yourself sitting on a ton of points without plans to use them on hotel award nights, this could be a fun way to burn through a few of them.
If you find yourself short on SPG points consider the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express or the Starwood Preferred Guest Business Credit Card from American Express both of which offer 25,000 bonus SPG points after spending $3,000 (personal card) and $5,000 (business card) in the first three months. Starwood Preferred Guest is also a transfer partner of American Express Membership Rewards, but offers a poor 3:1 transfer ratio, so I don’t recommend only as a last option.
