Earlier this month, American Airlines rolled out a promo where you can earn up to 15,000 bonus miles on roundtrip transcontinental flights between New York JFK and Los Angeles LAX to celebrate the launch of their fleet of new A321 transcontinental fleet. Today, United launched a competing promo where you can also earn up to 15,000 bonus miles on transcontinental flights – but theirs include not only JFK-LAX but also New York JFK to San Francisco SFO flights.
United BusinessFirst: 15,000 bonus miles – fare classes J, C, D, Z, P
Full-fare Economy: 10,000 bonus miles – fare classes, Y, B
Select Discount Economy: 5,000 miles – fare classes, M, E, U, H, Q, V, W, S
Registration is required before travel, and the bonus is only available on non-stop itineraries between LAX or SFO and JFK. Tickets must be purchased between December 16, 2013 and March 31, 2014 for travel between December 20, 2013 and March 31, 2014.
One-way itineraries earn half the bonus miles, and there is no limit to the number of miles you can earn. These miles do not count toward elite status.
United has been hard at work updating its transcontinental 757-200 ps planes, which operates on this route, and I had a very nice experience on in BusinessFirst from JFK-LAX this past summer. The new features of United’s refreshed p.s. product:
- 28 United BusinessFirst seats with 180-degree flat-bed seats
- 48 seats in Economy Plus with even more legroom than before (36 inches)
- 66 seats in United Economy
- Complimentary in-seat audio/video on-demand entertainment
- USB and standard 110v power outlets accessible from every seat
- Gogo Wi-Fi (coming later this year: connection speeds up to 3x faster)
I’m not sure how much extra traffic United is going to see based on this, but if you’ve been looking for an excuse to fly one of United’s newly reconfigured ps planes, then this could be just the reason you need – and hopefully we’ll see Delta matching this promo in the coming days too.
