Here’s a recap of the interesting points and miles news from the week:
Reminder – Citi Executive AAdvantage World Mastercard Bonus Up To 100,000 Miles: Citi launched a 100,000 mile bonus on this card which you can earn when you spend $10,000 in the first 3 months; in addition, you can receive $200 in statement credits on purchases in the first 12 months. Previously, the bonus was only 75,000 miles if you spent $7,500 in the first 3 months of card membership, or 60,000 miles if you spent $5,000 in 3 months. The 100K bonus offer is available at this link. It asks 6-digit agent referral code and airport code, but even if you just fill in your name, it directs you to the application page. This card is quite useful for travel, as it has smart chip technology and no foreign transaction fees. Just a reminder, it does have a $450 annual fee that is not waived.

Reminder: American Elite Status Boost And Renew Paid Options Now Live: Back in November, American announced that it would be launching two new options for frequent flyers to pay to requalify for status if they fall short of the miles that they need this year. These options are now live and available for purchase here through May 31. The two choices are: boost, meaning if you are close to the AAdvantage Executive Platinum, Platinum, or Gold status at the end of the year but don’t quite make it, you can boost to the next level; or renew, meaning if you were an elite status member in 2013 but weren’t able to retain your status by the end of the year, you are now eligible for a status renewal.
Reminder: Virgin Atlantic Transfer Ratio To Hilton HHonors Devaluing 25% February 6, 2014: Virgin Atlantic has announced that starting February 6, Flying Club miles will transfer to Hilton HHonors at a ratio of 1 mile to 1.5 HHonors points – a 25% devaluation. Here’s what Virgin posted: “Please note from 6 February 2014 the exchange miles to points rate is changing. Flying Club members will be able to exchange miles at the following rate: 2 Flying Club miles for 3 Hilton HHonors points. You can currently exchange miles at a rate of (up until 5 February 2014): 1 Flying Club mile for 2 HHonors point. Minimum Level: 10,000 miles and then in increments of 5,000. Just call the Flying Club Helpline with your HHonors account number.” So, you have a few more days until February 6 to convert before the devaluation if you choose to do so.

PointsHound Now Partnering With Alaska and Frontier: Booking website PointsHound is now offering the opportunity to earn miles with Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan and Frontier Airlines EarlyReturns, which is great news for those West Coasters who use these airlines frequently. PointsHound is a useful tool if you plan on booking often, as they offer twice as many miles for their most frequent customers. The site offers a low-price guarantee (so you’re not just “buying” miles with a higher rate) and they also offer separate class of Double Up rates that are guaranteed to earn elite status and benefits (typically third-party rates are disqualified from hotel loyalty programs.
American Airlines to Launch DFW-Shanghai Non-Stop in June: American currently offers non-stop flights to Shanghai from its hubs in Los Angeles and Chicago, and will be adding Dallas to the route map starting June 11, 2014; this new flight will be bookable beginning Sunday, February 2. As usual with new routes, there’s likely to be some good award availability in the first few days, so you might want to check it out if you have an Asia trip coming up this summer. The new route will be serviced with a 777-200, so it has American’s old interiors for now, unlike the 777-300 that American will fly DFW-Hong Kong, also starting this summer.
