American Airlines has been hyping the arrival of its new transcontinental A321 service since it started taking delivery of the planes, and has been offering bonus miles on JFK-LAX flights from January 7-March 31. Now that it is launching service on the new plane on its transcontinental route from San Francisco SFO to New York JFK, it has announced a similar promo where you can earn up to 15,000 bonus miles per roundtrip.

First/Business: 15,000 miles
Full-fare Economy: 10,000 miles
Economy (excluding O, Q classes): 5,000 miles

Screen Shot 2014-03-06 at 6.00.49 PMJust like in past promos, the terms state: “AAdvantage bonus mile offer is valid for round-trip travel on American Airlines marketed and operated nonstop flights between New York Kennedy (JFK) and San Francisco (SFO) from March 6, 2014, through May 31, 2014. Half the bonus shown will be awarded for one-way travel. Offer applies only to AAdvantage members who purchase and fly on eligible published fare tickets (excludes fares beginning with O and Q). Bonus miles will be awarded based on the booking class purchased. Bonus miles do not count toward elite status qualification or AAdvantage Million Miler status. Registration prior to travel is required.”

So though you’re only earning 5,000 miles in economy class, that’s still almost doubling the amount of miles you’d normally earn on this route, which is pretty generous! Just be sure to register prior to travel with the bonus code: NYSFO.

My window seat.
I flew the new A321 first class last month.

I personally flew the A321 in first class from LAX-JFK last month and had a really great experience – the seat is the same as AA’s 777-300ER business class, which I flew to Brazil last year, and TPG Managing Editor flew it in business class this week, so stay tuned for his review.

If you’re not an American flyer, remember that United originally matched American’s transcon bonus with its own promo where you can earn up to 15,000 bonus miles per roundtrip, and that’s on routes from JFK-LAX and JFK-SFO.  You earn the following amount of miles:

United BusinessFirst: 15,000 bonus miles – fare classes J, C, D, Z, P
Full-fare Economy: 10,000 bonus miles – fare classes, Y, B
Select Discount Economy: 5,000 miles – fare classes, M, E, U, H, Q, V, W, S

Registration is required before travel, and the bonus is only available on non-stop itineraries between LAX or SFO and JFK. Tickets must be purchased between December 16, 2013 and March 31, 2014 for travel between December 20, 2013 and March 31, 2014. One-ways earn half the bonus.

Here’s to hoping that United will now extend its special to match American’s new bonus, and that maybe Delta will throw its hat into the ring.
