How Do You Estimate Travel Time from Lounge to Gate?

TPG reader Precia tweeted me to ask:

@thepointsguy- “I’m new to lounges; how do you make sure you get from the lounge to your gate in time for your flight?”

This question hits home for me because I often fly out of New York, and the Centurion Lounge at LaGuardia Airport is located before security, so timing can be difficult. It’s a great place to relax before you board, but you won’t remember the experience fondly if you end up missing your flight.

Most lounges have displays that indicate boarding times and flight statuses, but that information can be incorrect. Many times I’ve had a mild heart attack thinking that my flight is in final boarding when I’m 10 minutes away, and then I get to the gate and they haven’t even started. Airline IT isn’t always reliable.

When I first arrive at a lounge, I usually check with the lounge attendants, since they can call the gate to get the actual flight status. I also ask how far the gate is, and if the lounge is before security, I might check on the line.  The most important thing is to just give yourself enough time.  That last bloody mary isn’t worthwhile if it ends with you sprinting through the airport; that’s not a good look for anyone.
