IHG Rewards Club’s PointBreaks Reward Nights are reduced award redemptions at IHG hotels (Intercontinental, EVEN Hotels, Crowne Plaza, Hotel Indigo, Holiday Inn, etc.) that require just 5,000 Rewards Club points for a free night.
Depending on where you redeem them, 5,000 points per night can be exceptional value, especially for Intercontinental properties (which normally require between 30,000-50,000 points per night) and EVEN Hotels and Crowne Plazas (which usually require 20,000-50,000 points, depending on the category). You can buy IHG points for 0.7 cents each, so that’s like paying $35 for a hotel night if you can find availability.
The roster of participating properties change every few months, and you can find the current list here for bookings through February 28.
IHG will release the full list of the next group of PointsBreaks hotels for bookings and stays February 25-May 31 tomorrow with bookings opening on Wednesday. But it looks like details on a few properties have already been released including:
- InterContinental Lhasa Paradise, Lhasa, XZ, China
- Crowne Plaza Suites Tequendama Bogota, Colombia
- Hotel Indigo San Jose Forum Costa Rica
- Holiday Inn Genoa City, Genova, Italy
- Holiday Inn Express Tampa-Anderson Rd/Veterans Exp, Florida, United States
- Staybridge Suites West Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
- Candlewood Suites Bloomington, Indiana, United States
Since these are the preview properties, I suspect many of the participating properties will (as usual) be lower-tier hotels in mundane destinations, but there are always a few worth checking out, and others that can be useful depending on your travel plans.
For instance, if you’re passing through San Jose, Costa Rica, en route to Papagayo or somewhere else in Central America, you might want to take advantage of the Hotel Indigo San Jose Forum, which is going for about $100 a night in March or 20,000 points normally.
Or the newly opened Intercontinental Lhasa in Tibet where nights are usually 35,000 points or $110 in March.
I’m hoping we’ll find some better values on the full list when it comes out. In the meantime, if you need IHG Rewards points quickly in order to book PointBreaks award nights, IHG is a 1:1 transfer partner of Chase Ultimate Rewards, so you can transfer points from cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Ink Plus to top up your account. The IHG Rewards Club Select card is also currently offering a sign-up bonus of 70,000 points when you spend $1,000 in the first 3 months.
As a reminder, IHG recently added a new rule that IHG Rewards Club members may only book two PointBreaks reservations at each hotel offered in a given period. However, there is no limit to how many nights can be booked at the discounted rate for each of those two reservations. Award space is limited at IHG hotels, and the best PointBreaks properties tend to go quickly, so if you are planning on booking any, I would check the IHG site first thing Wednesday morning.
In addition, Chase is offering the IHG Rewards Club Select Credit Card with a sign-up bonus of 70,000 points (after you spend $1,000 in the first three months). That’s an increase from the standard offer of 60,000 points. There have been 80,000 point offers floating around for years, but the 70,000 point offer is the best one that’s publicly available.
Are you planning on booking any of these hotels for 5,000 points? Please share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below.
