For the third installment of our new TPG weekend series, “Favorite Places,” I’m sharing a restaurant I fell in love with on my recent trip to Hong Kong—Yardbird.

Though this is one of the most popular eateries in the city, it’s pretty unassuming from the street—no glitz or glamour, just friendly service, a lot of whisky options, and a focus on delicious Izakaya-style yakitori (skewered, grilled chicken).

Be aware that Yardbird doesn’t take reservations, but if you go early and enjoy some drinks, like their awesome Awamori Margarita (that includes both tequila and a splash of citrus awamori, a rice liquor from Okinawa, Japan), you’ll be nice and relaxed by the time you get a table.

During dinner, they might just come around with free sake, like they did when I was there.

I’m not a huge sake fan, but I find it hard to say no to free

I was accompanied by friends who live in Hong Kong and know the menu well, but even they would recommend just letting the waiter order.

We all tucked into the crispy chicken-skin rice with a poached egg (pictured above) and yakitori skewers of rich pork belly with ponzu and onions, but my favorite thing was the sweet corn tempura appetizer. If you ask me, they should really rename this dish “crispy corn ball goodness.”

Yardbird is a super-fun place with really good food. If you find yourself in Hong Kong, know that it’s TPG recommended!

I always pay with my Chase Sapphire Preferred, especially when traveling abroad because there are no foreign transaction fees and you get 2 points per dollar spent (and 3x on the first Friday of every month)
