TPG reader Keith recently tweeted me to ask:
@thepointsguy – “I’m a Delta Diamond and get upgraded frequently on domestic routes, and was wondering if I could try and sell my upgrades to coach passengers at the gate?”
Keith, you could try this, but I see a lot of opportunity for disaster. The airline could easily find out that you sold the upgrade, which is directly against the rules of the SkyMiles program — as you’ll see in this screenshot:

Consequently, they could do a number of things to penalize you, ranging from canceling your hard-earned Medallion status to banning you from the program, the flight or even flying on Delta altogether. (I agree that this last one seems extreme, but you never know.)

Complimentary upgrades are for Delta Medallion members who actually earn them, and it’s unethical to sell them. Besides looking really tacky, you could get yourself into some trouble. Instead of trying to sell them, I’d encourage you to enjoy your own Medallion status and your own upgrades.
Please feel free to comment and let us know what you think about selling these upgrades — would you suggest it, or no?
