With the economy picking back up and business travel back on the rise, I was hoping that we might see some innovative hotel promotions this year in an effort to lure high-value customers. But it seems like chains, finding many of their rooms filled again, have decided to put points promotions on the back burner, and have simply unveiled one lackluster promotion after another.
Adding to the rolls of disappointing points opportunities, yesterday a Starwood rep commented on this FlyerTalk thread with details about the brand’s upcoming summer 2015 promo:
“SPG is making weekends even sweeter. Starting in June, SPG members can register to earn 1,000 bonus Starpoints on stays of two or more nights that include a Friday, Saturday or Sunday night. This offer will be valid at SPG’s collection of more than 1,200 hotels and resorts around the world through August 31st.
We wanted to let you know ahead of a press release tomorrow and we will be sure to let you know when the registration page goes live.

So between June 1-August 31, you can 1,000 bonus points per weekend stay of 2+ nights. At most, that means you can earn 500 bonus Starpoints per night.
Does Starwood seriously think anyone will be truly excited by this? Especially in light of current targeted bonuses of up to 7,500 points for completing 3 stays?
For a Platinum member like me, who already earns 6 points per dollar on Starwood purchases when I use my Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express (4 points per $1 with my status, and 2 more with the card), this summer bonus is the equivalent of spending $167. I’d have to stay at some pretty inexpensive properties to make the effort worth it here.
I’d even take recent past SPG promos like its Q1 Double Play, or last fall’s More For You double/triple points promo. The one good piece of news here is that all Starwood properties should be participating, so you don’t have to pay attention to an exclusions list.
All in all, I’d say this is pretty unexciting and probably won’t affect my own hotel plans for this summer. What are your thoughts? Leave a comment below!
