5 Reasons Why W Guangzhou Should Be the Brand Standard

After being wowed by the W Beijing Chang’an, I had very high expectations for the W Guangzhou—and it delivered. Ideally, all W Hotels would offer the consistent level of quality I experienced in Guangzhou. This hotel had it all—luxury, service, design, everything.
The W Guangzhou was the first W Hotel in mainland China, but it’s still only a couple of years old, having opened its doors in 2013. Here are my top five reasons why I can’t recommend the W Guangzhou highly enough. It’s worth the trip, even for just one night!
1. The W Lounge. One of several stunning spaces at this W (and many other Ws) is WOOBAR, an ultra-chic club lounge located in the hotel’s “Living Room,” or lobby. But my favorite area was the W Lounge, a private haven on the 26th floor accessible to Fabulous Room, Suite and all SPG Platinum guests. There I found an amazing spread of snacks, along with a complimentary, top-shelf, self-serve bar. Um, yes please! It really does make you feel like you’re coming home at the end of the night.
2. Service. Style is nothing without substance, and at the W Guangzhou, they have it all. The W brand globally has a snooty attitude; they try too hard to be hip, and when it comes to the staff, sadly this vibe can translate into an aloofness I find off-putting. But it’s the exact opposite in China. They consistently go above and beyond, without a hint of stress. At the W Guangzhou they purchased our train tickets to Hong Kong for us, and even shipped a blazer I’d left behind back to the States for me.
The capital of Guangdong province and home to more than 12 million people, Guangzhou is China’s third-largest city. Being right in the heart of the city, then, is an important plus. The property is located in the Tianhe District, which is about 45 minutes from Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN), and is often booked to capacity when trade fairs, conferences and expositions are in town.
4. SPG Platinum Recognition
At this Category 5 hotel, you can redeem SPG Free Nights for 12,000 Starpoints (or 16,000 in peak season), or use a cash + points redemption of 6,000 points + $110 on a standard room. And as usual, with any Category 3 or above Starwood Redemption, when you redeem four Free Nights you get the fifth night free.
But at the W Guangzhou, big upgrades are standard. Since I’m an SPG Platinum with 100-night Ambassador status, we were upgraded to a WOW Suite upon check-in. (The hotel has 317 guest rooms, including 32 suites.) If booked online through the hotel’s website, this suite would have run me a whopping CNY ¥6,600 ($1,063.33 USD).
Since SPG properties in China are generally on the cheaper side, I prefer to pay outright rather than redeem points–especially for one night’s stay. It was a pleasure to receive all of these features and amenities at a really decent price, and paying with my Chase Sapphire Preferred card enabled me to sweeten the deal even further by avoiding foreign transaction fees and earning 2x points for my stay.
I hope the rest of the W brand follows Guangzhou’s lead!
