TPG reader Alex tweeted me to ask about Delta Medallions flying on Virgin Atlantic:
@thepointsguy – “I have Delta Platinum Medallion status and have to fly Virgin Atlantic. Will any of my elite perks apply?”
A couple years ago, Delta announced it was buying a minority stake in Virgin Atlantic, which was great news for anyone you has a lot of Delta SkyMiles. You can fly Virgin Atlantic Upper Class to Europe for 125,000 SkyMiles round-trip. While it’s not the most cutting-edge business class seat, it’s pretty swanky and makes for a nice ride, as Virgin Atlantic has awesome lounges and an onboard bar on most of its planes.
As a Delta Platinum Medallion, you will get the following benefits when flying with Virgin Atlantic:
- Priority check-in
- Priority baggage handling
- Priority security
- Priority boarding
- Baggage fee waiver
- Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse access
Keep in mind that you can also earn MQMs on eligible Virgin Atlantic flights, and you can use your SkyMiles for Virgin award tickets as I mentioned previously.
In general, I wouldn’t expect to be upgraded. While Delta did just ease restrictions on mileage upgrades earlier this week, the airline (along with its SkyTeam and other partners) is still a bit stingy when it comes to complimentary upgrades. If you’re a Virgin Atlantic Flying Club elite member and economy is oversold, you might have better luck, but I haven’t heard many stories of Delta Medallions getting upgraded. However, I’d love to hear from readers on this. If you’re a Delta or Virgin elite who has been upgraded on the other airline, please share your story in the comments below!
