AA’s Operating a Daily 777-300ER Flight from LAX to Miami

Beginning December 17, American Airlines is launching nonstop service from Los Angeles to Sydney on the 777-300ER, which features 1-2-1 lie-flat seats in business class. On the same date (and prior to the Sydney flight, in fact), the airline will fly its new 777 from Los Angeles to Miami and back — at which point the wide-body jet will be used for daily passenger service between the two cities.

With the current Sydney schedule, AA’s flagship jet will spend nearly 15 hours on the ground each day, allowing plenty of time for a round-trip flight across the country.

Business class on the 777-300ER is a HUGE step up from the angle-flat seats AA has on its non-retrofitted 777-200, which currently operates this flight. First class is also an improvement, though economy is a bit tight, with 220 seats in a 3-4-3 configuration.

There are several daily flights between LA and Miami, so if you want to fly the 777-300ER, be sure to pick carefully. AA flight 252 departs LAX at 9am and arrives in Miami at 4:47pm each day. On the return, you’re after flight 1248, which departs Miami at 5:00pm (talk about a tight turnaround!) and arrives in LA at 7:44pm. Fares vary depending on the date, but expect first class to set you back around $3,000 (ouch!).

Economy, meanwhile, is more reasonable at $658 (though still high for this route). AA’s Executive Platinum members should be eligible for complimentary upgrades, and with 52 business seats on each flight, there’s a decent chance of it clearing. Oddly, business class generally doesn’t seem to be available to book, though that could change once AA adds more flights to the schedule — as of now, the 777-300ER is only loaded through January 4. Note that there currently isn’t any MileSAAver availability for this flight.
