Update: Hilton is now making it even easier to request a status match with a dedicated website.
Hilton’s top-tier Diamond status isn’t nearly as generous as Hyatt’s equivalent, which includes four confirmed suite upgrades per year, daily breakfast via room service at some properties (!) and even an ability to share perks with family and friends when you redeem points for their stay. Still, having status is better than not having status, and Hilton’s now making it possible to become an HHonors elite by matching status in a competing chain’s program.
Via FlyerTalk, Hilton announced that it will be matching status from competing programs through March 2017. To get started, email your HHonors number and “something that shows your elite tier in another program” to HHonorMyStatus@hilton.com. You must submit your request by January 11, 2016, though there’s no reason to wait until then. Note that it may take a few days to hear back, especially if you submit your request over the holiday weekend.
TPG contributor Nick Ewen values HHonors Diamond status at $1,324, so it’s definitely worth getting if you think there’s a chance you’ll be staying at a Hilton property between now and March of 2017. Many of the Diamond benefits are also available to Gold members, however, and you can get Gold status for free with The Platinum Card from American Express. It’s also included as a benefit of the Citi Hilton HHonors Reserve Card card.
Here are the benefits for Diamond members, alongside the equivalent benefits for Gold:
- 50% point bonus (25% for Gold)
- 48-hour room guarantee
- 5th night free on award stays (also available to Silver and Gold)
- Complimentary premium internet access
- Breakfast is included at Conrad, Curio, DoubleTree and Hilton hotels (also available to Gold)
- Late check out (also available to Silver and Gold)
- No charge for a second guest (also available to Silver and Gold)
- Complimentary fitness center access (also available to Silver and Gold)
- Room upgrades (also available to Gold)
- Executive lounge access
So as you can see above, having at least HHonors Gold status is worthwhile, for the complimentary breakfast alone. The 50% point bonus is also a nice Diamond perk, as is the guaranteed executive lounge access (even if you don’t get upgraded to an executive floor). While Hilton has yet to confirm which competitor tiers will be matched to Diamond, I imagine SPG and Marriott Platinum and Hyatt Diamond members will be eligible. However, since Gold status is almost as valuable as top-tier Diamond, it’s certainly worth matching to that as well, if you don’t already have it from the American Express Platinum or Citi Hilton Reserve cards.
