Update: Hyatt has confirmed that suite upgrades will be honored after expiration, as long as the stay begins on or before the expiration date. So if you’re checking in on February 28, 2017, your 2016 upgrades can be applied.
Hyatt’s Diamond Suite Upgrades are arguably the most generous hotel elite perk, allowing you to confirm a suite at booking up to four times per year. Each upgrade is valid for seven nights, so you can end up spending a total of 28 nights in a suite while paying for a base room each year you earn Diamond status with Hyatt. These suite upgrades can even be paired with other benefits, such as 4th Night Free with Citi Prestige.
Well, apparently Hyatt felt that Diamond Suite Upgrades were too generous. Previously, the upgrade certificates could be applied to reservations after the expiration date, as long as the suite was confirmed before each certificate expired. That’s the bit that’s going to change — when the next batch of four upgrades are issued on March 1, 2016, they’ll need to be redeemed for stays that will be completed by the expiration date (February 28, 2017).
Jeff Zidell, Hyatt’s SVP managing the Gold Passport program, shared the following this morning:
Diamond members enjoy many exclusive privileges including suite upgrades at the time of reservation four times annually on eligible paid nights. On March 1, 2016, Diamond members will receive four new Diamond Suite Upgrade Awards, and we want to provide clarity on an upcoming modification to the redemption period. What’s Changing? Suite awards issued on or after March 1, 2016 must be redeemed for reservations with a checkout date prior to the expiration date of the award. Suite awards not redeemed prior to the expiration date of the award will be forfeited. What’s not changing? Suite awards issued prior to March 1, 2016, must be redeemed by making a reservation no later than the last day of February 2016 for future reservations. In the event one of these Suite awards is redeemed for stay dates beyond the expiration date and the reservation is cancelled after the last day of February 2016, the Suite award will be forfeited. These changes will be reflected on our website and within our Terms and Conditions on February 1, 2016.
Ultimately, that’s not a huge setback, as you’ll still have a full year to redeem your certificates. Even after this new restriction is applied, I’d still consider Hyatt’s Diamond Suite Upgrades to be the most generous hotel elite perk in the industry.
