Swiss Introduces Premium a la Carte Economy Meals on Long-Haul Flights

If you’re not into economy airplane food, good news: Swiss recently launched a la carte dining on long-haul economy flights. Passengers can order ahead of time and enjoy these meals instead of the regular service.

There are six premium meals and two premium wines available, and you can order them for all long-hauls except flights to Cairo, Shanghai and Tel Aviv. They replace the first meal after takeoff, and you can order them up to 24 hours before your departure. However, the airline has a limited number of each meal option on flights, so get your order in early to be safe.

And before you ask, no, you can’t just order the wine; it can be booked only in conjunction with the meals. The meals range from ~$29 to ~$49 and the wines are ~$18.

Options include a “healthy choice” meal with a grilled salmon entree:

If you want to fool your tastebuds into believing you’re in a premium cabin, you could indulge in the “gourmet” choice, which costs about $49:

Be sure you want a meal before you book it; no cancellations or refunds are allowed, except if your flight is canceled. However, if you have to change your flight and a la carte dining is available on your new flight, it will transfer over.

While the meals don’t quite approach the fare Swiss business, they’re a step up from regular economy meals. But you can’t make changes or substitutions, so what you see is what you get. Plus, they are on the pricey side. But if you know you’re not into the standard economy options and are craving something particular like a Japanese meal, it’s nice to at least have the option.
