Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available – Hilton Honors Surpass Card from American Express, Hilton Honors Card from American Express

On December 31, 2016, Hilton completely eliminated its AXON rewards without any notice. Essentially, AXON awards offer discounts on award stays for HHonors members who own a co-branded Hilton Amex card, such as the Hilton Honors Card from American Express or the Hilton Honors Surpass Card from American Express.

As One Mile at a Time is reporting, the elimination of AXON awards was completely out of the blue, so Hilton HHonors has announced that it will temporarily allow AXON bookings. Between January 20 and February 15, 2017, HHonors members will be allowed to book AXON awards through the call center.

AXON awards don’t always give you the best value, so look into your options when considering booking one. Here’s a rundown of what AXON awards will cost you when you book a four-night stay:

  • Category 5 (normally 30,000-40,000 points per night) — 130,000 points
  • Category 6 (normally 30,000-50,000 points per night) — 160,000 points
  • Category 7 (normally 30,000-60,000 points per night) — 190,000 points
  • Category 8 (normally 40,000-70,000 points per night) — 220,000 points
  • Category 9 (normally 50,000-80,000 points per night) — 260,000 points
  • Category 10 (normally 70,000-95,000 points per night) — 300,000 points

As you can see, there could be some potentially good value to be had with these redemptions. For example, if you were to book a four-night stay at a top-of-the-line Category 9 property, you’d pay 320,000 HHonors points (at a rate of 80,000 points per night). However, if you were to book that as an AXON award, you’d need to fork over just 260,000 points.

If you think you could possibly get some value out of these redemptions, be sure to book your stay by February 15. Also keep in mind that you could get even more value out of your stay if you’re an elite member of the HHonors program, as your fifth night is free on award stays.
