Would Pizza Be Enough to Appease You if Your Flight Were Canceled?

Whether you like it or not, delays are a way of life for airlines — and the frequent flyers who utilize them. And while some of them, like an extra 10 minutes circling the airport while you wait for clearance to land, are nothing more than a small nuisance, others can disrupt an entire trip.
Delta passengers were left dealing with the latter scenario earlier this week when the carrier had to cancel approximately 300 flights out of Georgia, Tennessee, Louisiana, Ohio and Kentucky, among other states, due to severe weather in the Southeast. To counter the delivery of that bad news to passengers, the airline did something a little unexpected: it ordered more than 700 pizzas and sandwiches to help keep passengers, and their stomachs, happy. Games and coloring books were also handed out to help keep younger travelers busy while they waited.
According to Good Morning America, the airline wasn’t able to state the exact number of pizzas it ordered, but did confirm it had sent 160 pizzas and 60 footlong subs to be handed out to stranded passengers at Nashville International Airport (BNA) alone.

It’s not the first time Delta has resorted to freebies in order to appease flight-less customers; following the company-wide power outage that ended up grounding all Delta flights last August, the company handed out more than 4,000 Krispy Kreme donuts to waiting passengers. The carrier also sent flowers and Starbucks gift certificates to some customers and a fruit basket to someone who was forced to miss his daughter’s first day of kindergarten because of the cancellations.
Of course, Delta’s not the only airline that has attempted to play nice with antsy passengers. In early 2016, Skift reported on American Airlines’ “Gateside Amenities” plan, which took a proactive approach to filling tired customers’ bellies by bringing snacks to the gates of flights that were delayed by more than two hours. United, too, has been known to roll out the drink cart early when a flight is stuck on the tarmac, even if it’s just to offer bottled water and light snacks. Virgin Atlantic has done the same, but offered up some spirit-lifting cocktails instead. Same with JetBlue, which added in free Wi-Fi.

Alaska Airlines details its Tarmac Delay Plan right on its site (it, too, can involve snacks and beverages). Food and drinks aren’t the only amenities airlines are offering to show that they care about their customers; both Delta and American have dedicated teams of employees who will help usher delayed customers through customs and other time-consuming parts of the airport process when trying to make a connecting flight.
While these unexpected gestures are enough to perk up some passengers, not all travelers are created equal. Who wants a slice of pizza when they could get a travel voucher instead? Which begs the question: Would pizza be enough to appease you following a flight delay? Sound off, below.
