An unaccompanied minor was removed from an EasyJet flight from London-Gatwick (LGW) to Toulouse (TLS), France, yesterday and left alone at the departures gate after being informed that his flight was overbooked, according to The TelegraphThe passenger, a 15-year-old British student from West Sussex, was on his way to visit family in France and had checked into the flight with the help of his mother, Stephanie Portal, on what would have been only his second flight alone. The Guardian reports that the boy had already received a seat assignment when he was asked to leave the plane.

He then texted his mother, who returned to the airport at once to locate her son. “It’s crazy,” Portal told The Guardian. “They left him alone in departures. Luckily, I had still not got on board my train to London and could come back and find him. If I had not been there, I don’t know what would have happened; he’d have had no money for the train back or anything.”

Portal was able to convince EasyJet to reserve a seat for her son on the day’s final flight, although she said that its four remaining flights to Toulouse appeared to be overbooked as well.

The airline has since apologized for “any inconvenience caused.” An EasyJet spokeswoman told The Guardian that the airline is investigating “why [the boy] was able to board the aircraft as he should have been informed at the gate [that the flight was overbooked].” She also noted that EasyJet would look into its unaccompanied minor policies.

“EasyJet has a procedure to protect unaccompanied minors but unfortunately this was not followed on this occasion and so this will also be investigated,” the spokeswoman said.
