New York is always a good idea, and with return economy flights from London starting at £245, there has never been a better time to book. The lowest fares at £245 are departing Gatwick (LGW) with Norwegian, which offers a pretty decent economy product on its 787 Dreamliner aircraft. For £26 more, you can fly one of Virgin Atlantic’s brand new A350 aircraft from Heathrow (LHR), which the airline plans to operate on the route four times per day. TPG UK recently reviewed all three classes of the aircraft, and the new economy product faired pretty well.

How to decide which airline to fly? If it comes down to money, then Norwegian is definitely cheaper. Neither airline includes baggage in their lowest fares, but Virgin does provide an inflight meal where Norwegian does not. With Virgin, you can upgrade for £100 to have free seat selection and a checked bag included in the price of your ticket.

To book, head to Google Flights and set the departure city as Gatwick (LGW) for Norwegian and Heathrow (LHR) for Virgin, and the arrival airport as New York (JFK). Next, set the airline to either Norwegian or Virgin and scroll through the calendar to find the cheapest dates to fly, which are highlighted in green. Once you’ve got the flights you want, head to the Norwegian or Virgin Atlantic website to make sure you earn your Flying Club miles in the case of Virgin and are ATOL protected.
