One of the most valuable benefits of both the Platinum Card from American Express UK and the Business Platinum Card from American Express UK is the access to the Platinum concierge service.
Not only are American Express Concierges able to source last-minute reservations in restaurants that are otherwise full. But in my experience, they also always ensure that you’ll get one of the best tables in the house.
If you’re planning a trip overseas and provide the concierge with a list of criteria, they’re also very good at carrying out research and presenting you with a list of different dining options throughout your trip.
All of the above is truly valuable, but the advantages of using the Platinum concierge don’t end there. In addition to all of these benefits, there are also a series of restaurants that provide you with discounts, free dishes and free wine or cocktails just for reserving your table via American Express.
The restaurants that offer these additional benefits are grouped into two different programmes by American Express.
American Express Dining: Local Favourites
Ordinarily, this is my first port of call when searching for restaurant benefits, particularly when travelling outside of the UK. This is by far the most extensive of the three restaurant programmes, with each region of the globe having a lengthy PDF dedicated to its restaurants. The majority of participating establishments offer either 20% off the food bill or a complimentary bottle of wine.
Given the fixed nature of the wine benefit, this becomes increasingly less valuable as your party size increases. Of course, if you’re dining solo, you’ll be getting a great deal. Aside from these two benefits, a number of other restaurants offer either a glass of Champagne, a cocktail or an appetiser per person instead.
How to book
Either ask the American Express concierge to book for you or make the booking yourself, stating at the time of booking that you would like to make use of the Amex Platinum and Business Platinum benefits. Walk-ins are also accepted, and restaurants should honour the benefits, provided you ask for them when first being seated.
The fine print
Terms state that you must pay the bill with your American Express . Platinum or Business Platinum card.
Complimentary bottles of wine will only be offered when diners order at least one main course per person. Complimentary appetisers are only offered when diners order both a main course and a dessert. Benefits are limited to parties of 10 guests or fewer.
Global Dining Collection
The restaurants on this list all provide extra benefits to American Express cardholders, but the specific benefits are not listed on the website. You’ll need to call the American Express concierge and ask what they can do for you, since the website merely states that participating dining venues offer exclusive reservation access and “in-restaurant experiences”.
Often, the best you’ll get is one free cocktail per person. Given the pricing at some of these top restaurants though, this is most certainly worth calling up for.
There are a number of restaurants that only appear on this list and not the other two, which is why it’s always worth checking here if your preferred restaurant isn’t participating in Local Favourites.
Often, I’ve found that a restaurant will appear on this list first before ‘graduating’ to one of the other two. It is entirely possible that you’ll get 20% off your food bill one time and a free cocktail the next when dining at the same restaurant — consistency of benefits is not guaranteed.
How to book
Call American Express Platinum Concierge and ask what benefits the restaurant is willing to provide.
The fine print
There’s no small print on this offer.
There are many benefits to be had via both these cards when dining out, and it is always worth taking advantage of the two programmes on offer.
