IHG has partnered with British Airways for a limited-time-only offer. If you book a 2-night stay at any IHG Rewards property before September 30, you will receive a bonus of 1,000 Avios per stay. At TPG’s current valuation of 1.1p per Avios, that means this bonus is worth £11.
Let’s take a look and see if this promotion is valuable.
Take note that there are some terms and conditions for this promotion. You have to be an IHG Rewards member for this promotion, and need to set up British Airways as earning preference in your IHG Rewards My Account prior to check-in. On top of the 1,000 bonus Avios, you will still receive the base Avios you would otherwise earn. Furthermore, this bonus can only be applied to up to 15 stays for a total of 15,000 Avios.
To use this offer, the booking must be made through the special link from IHG to ensure the correct rate will be booked. As an example, we searched two relatively cheap nights at the Harlow Holiday Inn Express from 20-22 September 2021. First, we’ll check out the regular rate when booked on IHG.com (without going via the special link).
Looks like the cheapest rate available is a low £39.60, offering some flexibility with free cancellation a week out. There is also a fully flexible rate available that allows you to cancel up to one day in advance. Now, we use the special booking link to see the result there. Same dates, same hotel:
As you can see, this shows the 1,000 bonus miles rate, matching the Best Flexible rate. On this rate, there is no member exclusive discount available.
This restriction means this promotion only makes sense in certain circumstances. In any situation, you’d be paying extra to get these Avios compared to booking the Best Flexible Rate at the Member Exclusive discount, which is usually 4%. Aside from that, due to coronavirus measures, the advance booking rates are relatively flexible as well. This further reduces the number of situations in which you would book the fully flexible rate at all.
We’d only advise taking advantage of this promotion if you absolutely require the most flexible rate, and for some reason are unable to use the Member Exclusive Rate. There is a small exception: at low-cost hotels like the one in our example, it might make sense to pay slightly more (in this case £4.40 for the whole stay) to acquire the 1,000 Avios. That would effectively mean buying the Avios at a discounted price.
Once again, in case you want to use this promotion, make sure to go through the provided booking link to ensure the offer rate is applied. Keep in mind that the stay must be completed before 30 September 2021. Don’t forget to pay with an IHG credit card in order to earn bonus points for your booking.
