If you’ve signed up to get the 60,000-point bonus on the Citi Premier Card — either through the recently expired public offer or by having a friend refer you — you now have another attractive option for redeeming your points. Through Dec. 12, 2018, you’ll get a 25% bonus when transferring Citi ThankYou Points to Avianca LifeMiles.
ThankYou Points normally transfer to LifeMiles at a 1:1 ratio, but with this bonus you’ll get 1,250 LifeMiles for every 1,000 ThankYou Points you transfer. TPG values Citi ThankYou Points and LifeMiles equally at 1.7 cents each, so you’ll definitely come out ahead with this bonus.
Avianca LifeMiles has always been an underrated Star Alliance loyalty program, but recently it’s been getting some much-deserved attention. First, Amex surprised us by adding LifeMiles as a 1:1 transfer partner with no warning. Then, earlier this week, Capital One announced that Avianca was among the 12 airline transfer partners being added to the Venture and Spark family of cards beginning in December.
While Avianca’s customer service leaves something to be desired, its award chart is great both for short-haul economy flights and long-haul premium cabin redemptions. Unlike some other Star Alliance programs, Avianca doesn’t pass on fuel surcharges. This means you can book Lufthansa awards from the US to Europe for 63,000 miles each way in business class and 87,000 miles in first class. Most importantly, these awards will come with $100 or less in taxes, as opposed to $500+ if booking through Aeroplan. With the current transfer bonus, that comes out to 51,000 ThankYou Points in business class and 70,000 in first class, which is an absolute steal.
LifeMiles is one of the few loyalty programs to split the US into different award zones. Flights within the same zone only cost 7,500 LifeMiles in economy (6,000 ThankYou Points with the transfer bonus), while even the longest transcontinental flights are only 12,500 miles (the same amount United charges, or only 10,000 ThankYou Points with this bonus).
In addition to point transfers from Citi, Amex and now Capital One, LifeMiles regularly runs attractive bonuses on purchased miles. Whatever trip you’re planning, it shouldn’t be hard to top up your account and get you where you want to go. Just make sure to transfer your Citi ThankYou Points before midnight on Dec. 12, 2018, to lock in the 25% bonus.
