If you hold The Platinum Card from American Express U.K., you’ll want to move the card to the front of your virtual wallet. For a limited time, American Express U.K. is offering cardholders the Platinum Card the opportunity to earn double points on all spend.
As first reported by Head for Points, American Express is now emailing cardholders of the Platinum Card, informing them that they will earn double points on all purchases through 20 July 2020. The offer isn’t limited to any category of spending, so you’ll earn the 2x points on every pound you spend.
There’s no cap on the number of double points you can earn, and the points don’t expire in your Membership Rewards account. It’s worth noting, however, this isn’t for all American Express cards, but only the Platinum Card.
“We understand that these are incredibly difficult times, and we sincerely hope that [t]his email finds you safe and well”, American Express said in an email to Platinum cardholders. “With so much changing around us all each day, we remain committed to ensuring you continue to get the most out of your Platinum Card, and we are starting with Membership Rewards”.
TPG UK Director of Content Nicky Kelvin checked his recent spending activity on his Platinum Card and noticed the double points offer took effect. If you’ve made any purchases since 20 April with your Platinum Card, you should see the double points reflected in your Membership Rewards account.
Because American Express Membership Rewards points are a transfer partner of both British Airways Executive Club and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, arguably the two best options for a U.K.-based traveller, you’ll be earning 2 miles/Avios per pound spent. Until this offer expires as of 20 July, you’ll likely want to use the Platinum Card for all purchases in order to maximise the earning potential.
Alternatively, if you’re booking any travel through American Express Travel at any point in the next three months, you’ll earn a whopping 4 Membership Rewards points per pound spent. So, for example, if you booked a £2,500 holiday for your family through American Express travel and paid with your Platinum Card, you’d earn 10,000 points, which are worth £140 based on TPG U.K.’s most recent valuations.
In addition to doubling the earning of points until 20 July, American Express is also doubling the value when you Use Points Towards Purchases. In other words, you can pay for purchases with your points and get up to 1.8% cashback during the period when points earning is doubled. If you’d rather take advantage of saving cash at this time rather than saving points up for a future redemption, this is a worthy option.
Ultimately, this is a great deal from American Express U.K. The Platinum Card is the most premium card on offer in the U.K., and many of its most valuable benefits come in the form of travel perks, such as lounge access and hotel elite status. However, with the ongoing coronavirus crisis and restrictions on travel, many of these great perks have been rendered useless.
As a result, Amex was likely forced to come up with an alternate benefit for cardholders who are stuck at home and still paying the £575 annual fee. While this double point offer isn’t a permanent change to the card, it’s a great incentive for cardholders to keep their card at the front of their wallet for the time being. And, based on the language of the language sent in an email to cardholders, it sounds as though there may be more changes coming. For the time being, if you’re a Platinum cardholder and making any purchases for the next three months, this should be your credit card of choice.
If you don’t yet have the card, you can apply for the card and still have time to take advantage of this three-month offer. The card comes with a welcome bonus of 30,000 points after spending £4,000 in the first three months after approval. Each pound you spend toward meeting the minimum spending requirement will earn double points, meaning you’ll end up with at least 38,000 Membership Rewards points, which are worth £532 based on TPG U.K.’s most recent valuations.
