In the recent International Airlines Group (IAG) Capital Markets Day presentation, the AvGeek, points and miles and luxury travel world were focussed on the section of the presentation dealing with the rollout of British Airways’ Club Suite, which is due to be complete by 2025.
However, buried within the 175-slide presentation that covered the various airlines in the group, strategy and investment, there were some fascinating numbers in the Avios section. Here are the juiciest figures that IAG revealed.
1. There are 34 million members of IAG loyalty programmes
This includes nine million active members, of which unsurprisingly, seven million are in Europe. IAG defines an active user as one who has collected or redeemed Avios in the past 12 months.
2. 33% of passenger journeys come from loyalty programme members
This means that 67% of people are flying either as non-members or simply not entering their frequent flyer numbers. It’s unclear whether these people have entered another partner’s loyalty programme number (for example, an American Airlines AAdvantage number), but the number of those missing out on these points is still very high.
If you are one of these 67%, head over to our Beginner’s Guide! When looking at revenue, rather than passenger numbers, the proportion is higher. IAG also said that 44% of flight revenue comes from programme members.
3. £40 billion is spent collecting Avios each year
This huge figure relates to the Avios collected through every day spending, as opposed to flying and makes up 51% of the total amount of Avios earned. Therefore, more Avios are earned overall on everyday spending than flying.
This hefty sum comes from spending on 930+ partners and are earned at such an insane rate.
4. 220,000 Avios are collected per minute
Every single minute of the day, every day of the year, 220,000 Avios are collected.
5. 900 reward flights are booked per hour with Avios
As every hour goes by, 900 reward flights are booked by people like you and me. That’s 15 redemptions every minute (using my maths, not IAG’s below). On an annual basis, that is eight million reward flights each year.
6. 89 billion Avios are spent each year
This amount is spent on travel and experiences, and such a huge figure it’s almost hard to fathom. It includes any flight where Avios have been used, including Pay With Avios.
The numbers are indeed mindblowing. If you are not already in on the action, head to our ultimate guide to Avios, and if you already have a balance waiting to be used, consider some of the best ways you can use your Avios.
