I love food and I love a deal. When the two come together, there’s no keeping me away.
At the start of September, I found a very generous cashback offer available on my American Express Platinum card. The deal stipulates that purchases will be refunded 100% in the form of a statement credit up to £200. The offer expires 31 December 2021 and can be used as many times as you like across the restaurants up to a limit of £200.
It is important to note that there is a cumulative cap of £200 cashback. I was contacted by some readers who had complained about the language of the offer and had assumed they could utilise the whole £200 multiple times. This is not the case.
After loading the offer to my account, I set out to scour the list of over 1,000 restaurants to pick one to test the process.
To my delight, one of my favourite London restaurants, Fischer’s, appears on the list. Fischer’s is a Vienesse style cafe with arguably the best schnitzel in London. It is a staple haunt for a certain group of my friends and the gang were gathered to dine, whilst I enjoyed feeling smug at the thought that my portion of the bill would be returned to me.
A veritable feast was ordered including starters of chopped liver with dill pickles, the selection of cured salmon and the herring (go for the sweet mustard option!). This was followed by both the signature chicken and veal schnitzels.
Make sure you have a willing partner with you so that you can order both options and share.
Including drinks and service, the bill came in at £300 between 5 of us. I charged my £60 share to my Amex Platinum card. We visited the restaurant for dinner on 2 September, but it wasn’t until just over two weeks later on 17 September that the credit appeared in my account.
Amex does state that it can take up to 90 days from the offer end date of 31 December for the credit to appear, so don’t worry if you don’t see the credit immediately.
Even this £200 credit alone goes some way to justifying the £575 annual fee on the Platinum card, especially when considered alongside the comprehensive benefits and the current huge 60,000 Membership Reward points welcome bonus.
If you’ve been considering upgrading to this card, perhaps now is the time to take a deeper look.
