American Express has added a lucrative new offer for cardholders of the American Express Preferred Rewards Gold Card. Through early June, cardholders can earn three additional Membership Rewards points for every pound spent at Sainsbury’s.
While the promotion is on offer, cardholders can earn a total of four Membership Rewards points per pound spent at the supermarket chain — one point per pound at the standard rate, plus three additional points per pound. The offer runs through 9 June 2021.
This is a really nice offer from Amex — and one that cardholders should get some good use out of for the duration of the promotion. In order to take advantage, you must enrol your card in the offer on American Express’ website.
You can double-dip on this offer by taking advantage of British Airways’ new partnership with Sainsbury’s Nectar card. With the partnership, you’ll earn 1 Nectar point for every pound spent at Sainsbury’s. You can then convert 400 Nectar points to 250 Avios — or vice versa. With the Nectar programme, there’s the opportunity to earn even more points by saving eligible offers to your card.
So, with this promotion, you can earn 4 Membership Rewards points per pound spent at Sainsbury’s plus 1 Nectar point per pound spent at Sainsbury’s.
Let’s take a worked example. Say you spend £175 on your weekly shop for your family. With the Amex Gold promotion, you’ll earn a total of 700 Membership Rewards points per week for that shop — worth £10 based on TPG U.K.’s most recent valuations.
Then, on top of that, you’ll earn at least 175 Nectar points at a minimum. You’ll earn even more Nectar points if you cash in on bonus offers through the Nectar app.
Through the nine weeks through 9 June, at that rate, that example could end up with 6,300 Membership Rewards points — worth £88 based on our most recent valuations. In addition, that example would earn at least 1,575 Nectar points — though likely more.

Ultimately, this is a great new promotion from Amex. If you’ve got an Amex Gold Card and frequently shop at Sainsbury’s, this is a no-brainer for registration.
The Amex Gold Card currently comes with a welcome bonus of 20,000 Membership Rewards points after spending £3,000 in the first three months. The card comes with an annual fee of £140, which is waived for the first year.
