British Airways Executive Club offers fantastic value from its Reward Flight Saver (RFS) redemptions to Europe, with low Avios required and (relatively) low fixed fees, taxes and surcharges. The airline’s Executive Club has expanded its new trial with several changes to how fees and taxes are calculated and can be paid.

First of all, the good news. Many economy RFS redemptions have been reduced slightly in fees and taxes. For the shortest routes, we have seen several destinations reduced from £17.50 down to £15.50 one-way, which is a small price reduction, but always welcome. For return itineraries, the price drops from £35 to £31. Executive Club has advised TPG UK that this reduction in price depends on destination, and does not apply to all RFS redemptions.

Like the trial in April, this expanded version also offers an option for payment of those fees and taxes with Avios for any Reward Flight Savers. By using Avios to pay for taxes and fees, you can reduce the price of them down to just 50p one way or £1 return by paying more Avios. This trial applies to every European destination to which British Airways operates.

While flexibility and more ways to use Avios are always appreciated, the value passengers will receive by reducing their fees and taxes by using more Avios on these redemptions is poor. Using London to Edinburgh one-way as an example, you can either pay:

  • The ‘standard’ off-peak amount of 4,000 Avios +£15.50 (previously £17.50 as described above); or
  • A new option of 7,500 Avios plus just £0.50

The new option means that you could spend an additional 3,500 Avios in order to save £15. This gives those Avios a value of 0.042p — which is less than half the current TPG UK valuation of Avios of 1.1p each.

The bad news is that the fees and taxes for many Club Europe RFS redemptions will increase by 0.50p each way, however this is a very mild increase, representing only a 1%-2%.
