Keep checking for the perfect seat — TPG reader success story

We’ve been asking to hear your travel success and mistake stories to both celebrate and help our TPG UK community.

This week, we received a success story from Andrew whose persistence in checking seat maps paid off on a recent Cathay Pacific flight:

“On a recent trip to Australia, the seat map on my flight from Hong Kong (HKG) to Sydney (SYD) showed it was full in business class, and the only seat available was the bulkhead right by the toilet. This was definitely not a seat I wanted.

However, after chatting to the staff at Cathay Pacific, they gave me advice to check the seating for the flight daily. They said there are often last-minute cancellations, and if someone cancels their ticket, that seat selection will go back in to the seat pool.

Five days before travel, a perfect window seat became available well away from the toilet that I was able to select online. It was a pain checking every day, but the benefit was worth it, as I observed the traffic near the toilet on the flight was high so was glad I was not stuck sitting there — even in business class.”

Andrew’s successful tale is a good reminder that it pays to check your seat before your flight. If you’re keen on moving around the cabin, consider setting an alert on ExpertFlyer, which will notify you if a seat opens on your flight, among other functions.
