We’ve been asking to hear your travel success and mistake stories to both celebrate and help our TPG UK community.

This week, we received an unusual story from Phil, who turned down what would have been one of the best-value upgrades we’ve ever seen:

“My biggest mistake was declining an upgrade to business class on an Emirates Boeing 777-300 from Newcastle (NCL) to Dubai (DXB). I had just got on the plane, settling into my economy seat when the flight purser came over to me offering to upgrade me in exchange for my 8,000 Emirates Skyward miles, which were expiring soon.

I was already flying business on the connecting flight from Dubai (DXB) to Taipei (TPE) on Emirates’ flagship Airbus A380, and as I was travelling with my parents, I already felt bad for ditching them on the second leg to Taipei, so I declined the upgrade offer. I still regret that to this day!”

We currently value Emirates Skywards miles at 0.9p each which would make 8,000 of Phil’s miles worth around £72. Considering a paid upgrade on this flight from economy to business class could easily be £500 this would have been an incredible use of his expiring Skywards miles.
