Delta 767 Aborts Takeoff at JFK, Brakes Catch Fire

A fire erupted in the brakes of a Delta Air Lines Boeing 767 on Monday night at New York (JFK) following the aircraft’s aborted takeoff.

Delta Flight 420, which was departing New York (JFK) for Accra (ACC), was forced to abort its takeoff on the runway when an airspeed warning indicator went off, according to a statement from Delta.

After aborting its takeoff, the aircraft exited the runway at JFK’s Taxiway A, which is when the brakes overheated and caught fire. Video taken at the scene of the incident and posted online by the Port Authority Police Benevolent Association shows a large emergency response, including firefighters extinguishing the flames near the plane’s landing gear.

Passengers evacuated the aircraft via a mobile stair unit. According to the Port Authority, there were no flight disruptions at JFK. There were no injuries reported among the flight’s 205 passengers or eight crew members.

Delta issued the following statement to TPG: “Delta apologies [sic] to our customers onboard Flight 420 for delaying their travel. We are working to get customers to their destination as soon as possible.”

The airline said that customers were accommodated in hotels overnight and also received meal vouchers. In addition, they’ll be offered a gesture of service recovery as an apology and booked on an alternative flight Tuesday evening.

The Boeing 767-300 — registration N180DN — is a nearly 27-year-old aircraft. Delta took delivery of the 767 in April 1992, and it has remained under Delta’s control since.
