You might think the only way to earn valuable Avios, the points currency of British Airways, is to fly with British Airways. However, there are plenty of different ways to earn Avios that don’t require going anywhere near an airport.

In fact, it’s very easy to earn thousands of Avios without even leaving the house.

British Airways has teamed up with Barclays for a unique new banking product called Barclays Avios Rewards where you can earn Avios simply for keeping a bank account open.

How it works

If you’re eligible for Barclays Avios Rewards, you can opt-in through the Barclays app. Once you’re enrolled, you’ll receive the following perks for a £12 monthly fee:

  • 25,000 bonus British Airways Avios if you are new to Barclays, open a Barclays Premier current account and perform a current account switch from your existing bank to Barclays Premier within 90 days — worth a huge £275 based on our most recent valuations;
  • 2,500 bonus Avios if you have already held a Barclays Premier current account, or a Barclays Personal Wealth current account for at least four months — worth £28 based on our most recent valuations;
  • 1,500 Avios each and every month you are enrolled in the Barclays Avios Rewards programme (18,000 Avios per year, worth £198 based on our valuations); and
  • A British Airways cabin upgrade voucher at the end of every 12 months you are enrolled in Barclays Avios Rewards.

Make sure you meet the criteria to enrol in the Barclays Avios Rewards programme. This means you must have either a Barclays Premier account and/or a Barclays Personal Wealth account. To open a Barclays Premier account, you must have a minimum annual gross (i.e. before tax) income of £75,000 that you can deposit into a Barclays account via your monthly earnings.

You can open a Barclays Premier account jointly with someone else, but at least one account holder must meet this income requirement by themselves in order for you to successfully enrol in the Barclays Avios Rewards programme.

To qualify with a Barclays Personal Wealth current account, you must have at least £100,000 invested in savings or investments with Barclays.

Avios without leaving the house

Once you’ve joined the Barclays Avios Rewards programme, you’ll be rewarded with 1,500 Avios deposited directly into your Executive Club account each and every month without having to lift a finger.

You might think that it doesn’t make sense to pay what is essentially an account keeping fee of £12 a month to be enrolled in the programme, but as we explain here, the Avios you earn each month just for being in the programme more than justify the monthly fee.

That’s before you even take into account the huge welcome bonus for joining the programme, as well as the upgrade voucher you earn each year after being in the programme for 12 months.

As an example of how you could use this voucher, you could save 40,000 Avios on a Club World redemption to Dubai (DBX), or £2,000 on a Club World cash fare to New York (JFK). You will earn this voucher at the end of your first 12 months of being in the programme, which gives you plenty of time to plan how to maximise it.

Hopefully, international travel will be far more normal than it is right now!

Other ways to earn Avios from home

If you’re spending more time at home than in the air right now, there are plenty of ways to other ways to earn Avios from the comfort of your living room. For example, if you’re doing online shopping from the likes of popular retailers like Apple, M&S, Samsung, Selfridges, Carphone Warehouse, Mr Porter or hundreds of others, don’t forget you can earn Avios for these purchases by simply going via the British Airways eStore.

To pay for these purchases, you can use an Avios-earning credit card to earn even more Avios. There’s the popular British Airways American Express Card and the British Airways American Express Premium Plus Card with their valuable Companion Vouchers as well as generous welcome bonuses and Avios for every £1 you spend, at home or while travelling.

There are also credit cards that earn American Express Membership Rewards points, which you can convert to Avios at a handy 1:1 rate.
