Taking advantage of the free hotel status from my credit card: TPG staff success story

This week, our U.K. points and miles expert Ben Smithson tells us about how he combined his points and complimentary elite status from a credit card for an excellent stay in the Middle East recently.

“I have multiple complimentary elite statuses from the Platinum Card from American Express U.K. The two I use the most are the Hilton Honors Gold and Marriott Bonvoy Gold. On a recent visit to the Middle East, I needed one-night accommodation in Bahrain. Hotels were quite expensive for cash rates so I looked at using hotel points. I found the Residence Inn by Marriott Bahrain available for only 17,500 Bonvoy points per night, which would save me around £200 — right on the current valuation of Bonvoy points.

I booked a basic room, and my Bonvoy Gold number was listed on the booking. My flight arrived into Bahrain mid-morning and I went straight to the hotel, arriving there at 11 a.m. I was warmly welcomed by the staff, thanked for my loyalty and status, informed that I could check-in immediately and that I had been upgraded to a one-bedroom apartment. I politely asked for a late checkout as my flight the following day was not until 7 p.m. and was advised as a reward for my loyalty I could checkout as late as I wanted, so selected 5 p.m.

The room was huge, very comfortable and mine for 30 hours and completely free on points!”

Ben’s story is a great example of the value to be had by benefits of a credit card, such as the Platinum Card. It comes with elite status in the following programmes: Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, Radisson Rewards, Melia Rewards and Shangri-La Golden Circle. While the benefits of each of the statuses differ, you can likely take advantage of benefits that you otherwise wouldn’t get as a non-status-holding customer.
