Iberia Flight Has Engine Issue Over Atlantic Ocean, Executes Emergency Landing

An Iberia flight en route from New York to Spain was over the Atlantic Ocean when it had a sudden engine problem and was forced to make an emergency landing at Boston’s Logan Airport (BOS).
Iberia Flight 6252 took off from New York’s JFK airport at about 9:15pm Tuesday, heading for Madrid (MAD). About 90 minutes into the flight, crew members “detected a technical problem in [one] of the engines” a spokeswoman for the airline told TPG. Passenger Melissa Miller said that flyers “knew something was up” when passengers began smelling smoke and gas in the aircraft cabin, the AP reports.
FlightRadar24 shows the plane was over the Atlantic Ocean just off the coast of Nova Scotia when it turned around.
The Airbus A350-900 aircraft landed safely at BOS around midnight, and there were no injuries among the flight’s 265 passengers, the airline said. Iberia’s spokeswoman said the carrier has been “working to find the best and fastest solution to carry the customers on board to their final destination.”
Dozens of passengers had to sleep at the Boston airport while accommodations were made.

As of 9:00am in Boston, Iberia says 125 customers have been rebooked on direct flights from Boston, either operated by Iberia or other carriers, departing today, and 110 customers are traveling by bus to New York, where they will be rebooked on Iberia and on other airlines’ flights.
A group of 30 passengers are still at BOS either waiting for their bus transfer to New York or to be rebooked on flights departing from Boston, the spokeswoman told TPG. “Iberia has been able to find accommodation in Boston for 55 of the customers flying today, due to the lack of hotels available, we have offered the rest of the passengers staying in Boston to cover their accommodation and meals costs.”
The Madrid-based airline also apologized to passengers for “the inconveniences” of the engine problems and “the difficulties in finding accommodation.”
It remains unclear exactly what the issue was with the plane’s Rolls-Royce engine. According to PlaneSpotters.net, the aircraft — registration EC-MYX — is just two months old, having been delivered to Iberia in July 2018.
