If you participated in Iberia’s recent promotion that offered 9,000 bonus Avios per flight — up to 90,000 Avios — you may remember the airline’s unpopular condition that the promotional Avios would not be transferable to British Airways.
However, on Saturday Head for Points reported that Iberia had backpedaled, apparently on the heels of a critical feature story from The Mail on Sunday in the United Kingdom. TPG Senior Points and Miles Contributor Richard Kerr confirmed this morning that it’s now possible to transfer your bonus promotional Avios from your Iberia Plus account to your British Airways Executive Club account.
Richard only has 9,000 Iberia Avios in his account right now, all of which are from the recent Iberia promotion. As the screenshots above and below demonstrate, this morning Richard was able to access the normal transfer screen to move the Avios from Iberia to British Airways and potentially move the entire balance between accounts if he chose to do so.
Ultimately, Richard decided to only transfer 3,000 Avios to British Airways, but the transfer went through as expected and both account balances updated correctly.
By transferring your Avios to British Airways, you may be able to avoid the December 1 redemption deadline established during the Iberia promotion. There are, however, a few important considerations to keep in mind, including one huge caveat…
A Negative Iberia Plus Account Balance
In June, an Iberia spokesperson outlined to Loyalty Lobby that “if the customers transfer these Avios to their British Airways Executive Club account, they will have a negative balance in the Iberia Plus programme, as those Avios wouldn’t have been spent by the date mentioned above [Dec. 1].”
That means it’s entirely possible that if you transfer these promotional Avios to British Airways, Iberia could consider them “unspent” as of December 1 and remove them from your Iberia Plus account, leaving you with a potential negative balance. That could be a significant problem if you intend to continue to actively use your Iberia account or participate in the airline’s future promotions.
As has long been the case with transfers between the two airlines, both your Iberia Plus and British Airways Executive Club accounts must be at least 90 days old and have identical account information to use the “Combine My Avios” feature.
If you’re entirely unable to redeem your promotional Iberia Avios by the December 1 deadline, transferring them to British Airways may be worth the risk. But as flights booked with Iberia Avios often have less expensive fees and taxes, it’s probably still wiser to try and redeem the Avios within the Iberia Plus program rather than taking on the risks of transferring them.
