For years, the InterContinental Hotel Group — better known as IHG — has run a hotel discount promotion called PointBreaks. Although long-term fans would grumble that PointBreaks was much more lucrative in the past, it remains a promotion worth taking advantage of when you’re able to.

IHG discounts around 100 properties to award rates as low as 5,000 points per night — which is just $25 per night at current TPG valuations — although a bulk of the properties are usually priced at either 10,000 or 15,000 points per night. That makes even the most expensive properties on the list available for just $75 per night worth of points. And, there’s usually a few gems included in each list.

The catch is that there’s a limited number of nights available at each property, and those gems are scooped up quickly. So, it important to know when each new version goes live. With the current version of PointBreaks concluding at the end of Feb. 2019, we expected a new version to be released soon. Sure enough, we just got word when the next version is going up: Monday, Feb. 25 at 12:00pm ET for booking through the end of May 2019.

While InterContinental hotels — IHG’s most-prestigious brand — can be few and far between on PointBreaks, an IHG spokesperson has confirmed that there will be at least two InterContinental properties on this version of PointBreaks.

Here are the four properties that we know will be on this version of the program:

InterContinental Pattaya

  • Location: Thailand
  • Standard rate: 35,000 points
  • PointBreaks rate: 15,000 points — 57% discount

It’s always great to see InterContinental properties on the PointBreaks list, and IHG has included another Southeast Asia beauty this time around. Located a couple of hours south of Bangkok, the InterContinental Pattaya looks like it’s worlds away from the bustling, polluted metropolis.

Award nights normally cost 35,000 points per night — which makes it eligible for the upcoming capped anniversary free nights from the IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card and the discontinued IHG Rewards Club Select Credit Card. However, you’ll be able to book it for just 15,000 points per night from Feb. 25 through the end of May 2019.

InterContinental Sofia

  • Location: Sofia, Bulgaria
  • Standard rate: 35,000 points
  • PointBreaks rate: 15,000 points — a 57% discount

One of IHG’s newest InterContinental properties, the InterContinental Sofia opened in late 2017. Located in the heart of the Bulgarian capital, the hotel is just a couple of blocks from the iconic Alexandar Nevski Cathedral.

Starting Monday, you can book this property for just 15,000 points per night for stays through the end of May. While that doesn’t extend into core summer travel season, April and May are pleasant times to visit the southern European capital. In April, highs are in the 60s Fahrenheit with lows in the 40s. May is even more pleasant with highs in the 70s and lows in the upper 40s.

Hotel Indigo Mt. Pleasant

  • Location: South Carolina, USA
  • Standard rate: 40,000 points
  • PointBreaks rate: 15,000 points — a 62.5% discount

One of my favorite IHG brands is the funky but posh Hotel Indigo brand. Katie and I spent Christmas just down the road from family at the Hotel Indigo Birmingham Five Points South for just 11,250 IHG points per night by combining a 15k PointBreaks property with the fourth night award free benefit of the IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card. And it looks like we will get to do the same again on this version of the PointBreaks list.

IHG is including another southeastern US Hotel Indigo in this version: the Hotel Indigo Mt. Pleasant. Located just across the bridge from downtown Charleston, Mt. Pleasant is the place to stay if you want to be closer to the beaches than the Battery. (And I happen to know it well, as I’ve had family living in Mt. Pleasant for decades.)

The property just opened in July 2018, so this promotion will let you check out the hotel within its first year of operation. Plus, Charleston is a great place for a spring getaway.

Crowne Plaza Manchester — Oxford Road

  • Location: United Kingdom
  • Standard rate: 35,000 points
  • PointBreaks rate: 15,000 points — a 57% discount

Another new property that made the PointBreaks list is the Crowne Plaza Manchester, which just opened in September 2018. Located adjacent to the University of Manchester, the hotel is a short hop from downtown Manchester and just a 15 minute drive from the stadium for Manchester United.

Make sure that you check cash prices at this hotel before assuming that you’re getting a good deal. Cash prices for random dates that I checked start at just $100 per night. While using points during PointBreaks is generally going to be better, it might be worth using cash if you need to hit an Accelerate target.

Tips to Prepare for Monday

If you need to stock up on points so you’re ready to book when the list launches, IHG is currently running a 75% bonus when you buy points through Feb. 28. When you buy at least 26,000 points, you’ll get a rate of 0.57 cents per point.

Although that’s higher than TPG’s valuation at 0.5 cents per point, it’s a great deal if you can utilize these PointBreaks opportunities. At the 0.57 purchase rate, nights at 5,000 point properties cost $29 and the most expensive properties on the list cost no more than $86 per night.

Another great way of maximizing the PointBreaks promotion is through the IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card‘s fourth night free benefit. Cardholders automatically get each fourth award night free — even on PointBreaks redemptions. Just this week I stayed at the InterContinental Phu Quoc Long Beach Resort for four nights for a total of 45,000 IHG points by combining the prior PointBreaks promotion and this fourth night free benefit:

The IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card is currently offering an 80,000 IHG point sign-up bonus for spending $2,000 in the first three months after opening the card plus an additional 40,000 bonus points after spending a total of $5,000 on purchases within 6 months of account opening. Factoring in the unlimited fourth night free benefit, that’s enough points for up to 20 nights at a 5,000 point PointBreaks property or 10 nights at a 10,000 point PointBreaks property. However, you’ll have to wait until the next PointBreaks list to utilize these benefits, as they won’t kick in before this version goes live on Monday.
