Italian carrier ITA has launched a generous new status match offer and it’s a handy way to pick up elite status in the SkyTeam alliance if you have status with British Airways Executive Club or other popular loyalty programmes.

Status matches are where one programme will match your status from another programme to the equivalent level in their own programme. For example, a Oneworld airline might match a Star Alliance Gold status from a competing airline. Why would they do this? Because they want your loyalty and your business. And why would you do this as a traveller? Because it allows you to enjoy some of the perks you have earned in another programme immediately, without starting from scratch.

It can be a “try before you buy”.

Rising from the ashes of Alitalia, ITA recently announced that like their predecessor, they will be a member of the SkyTeam alliance. This means that even if you are not flying with ITA, you could use elite status in the new ITA loyalty programme, Volare, to enjoy benefits on fellow SkyTeam airlines like Air France, KLM, Korean and Delta. Depending on the status level, these benefits could include increased checked baggage allowances, priority check-in, seating, security and boarding as well as that all-important lounge access.

The process for applying for a status match is straightforward, and I completed it in under five minutes today.

If successfully matched, your new elite Volare statuses (which will be either SkyTeam Elite or SkyTeam Elite Plus) will commence on 1 January 2022, and be valid for 12 months.

The Volare programme is also offering new members 10,000 bonus miles for enrolling during this promotional period and completing two flights on ITA (either a single return or two one ways) prior to 31 December 2021. If you are planning a trip to Italy before the end of the year, this could be a great way to earn an easy stack of miles in this new programme. Points cannot be redeemed until 1 March 2022.
