Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado Airport will close overnight for five months beginning 6 January 2020. Portugal’s Expresso reports that the closure will  take place from 11:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. each day until summer in order to minimise disruption during peak travel hours.

The expansion is part of a 650 million euro investment, which will add rapid exit taxiways and extra aircraft stands. In turn, Lisbon Airport should see increased capacity, allowing for additional flights and, more importantly, new routes and airlines to connect at the increasingly popular tourist destination.

EasyJet’s Country Manager for Portugal José Lopes said, “We can’t add any new flights because there aren’t any slots”.

So far, only one route has been cancelled for the duration of the closure: EasyJet’s Lisbon (LIS) to Lille (LIL) route.

Ryanair is the only airline operating a route between Lisbon and the U.K. that may see schedule changes, as it’s currently scheduled to depart Lisbon within the hours of closure:

  • FR1885 Lisbon (LIS) 6:20 a.m. Departure → Stansted (STN) 9:10 a.m. Arrival

According to Expresso, Lopes said some flights arriving during the hours of closure will be diverted to other airports. Several flights to and from the U.K. could be affected if there are slight delays to one leg or residual delays to operations.

For example, Ryanair’s winter schedule from Manchester to Lisbon on its Thursday and Sunday flights could be readjusted for the closure period:

  • FR3952 Manchester (MAN) 8:25 p.m. Departure → Lisbon (LIS) 11:10 p.m. Arrival

While it cut its service to London City (LCY), TAP Air Portugal’s year-round service from Heathrow to Lisbon operating Thursday to Sunday could be affected in the case of a delay:

  • TP1369 London Heathrow (LHR) 7:55 p.m. Departure → Lisbon (LIS) 10:30 p.m. Arrival

British Airways year-round service from Heathrow to Lisbon could be affected by the closure if the outgoing flight is delayed leaving LHR.

  • BA504 London Heathrow (LHR) 7:50 p.m. Departure → Lisbon (LIS) 10:30 p.m. Arrival (Saturdays)
  • BA504 London Heathrow (LHR) 7:55 p.m. Departure → Lisbon (LIS) 10:35 p.m. Arrival (Sundays)

Wizz Air’s departure from Lisbon to Luton could also be affected. From 29 March 2020, the following schedule operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays:

  • W94494 Lisbon (LIS) 9:55 p.m. Departure → Luton (LTN) 0:45 a.m. (+1) Arrival

And on Monday and Friday:

  • W94494 Lisbon (LIS) 10:20 p.m. Departure → Luton (LTN) 0:55 p.m. (+1) Arrival

If you’re scheduled to fly to or from Lisbon Airport from early January 2020 until the summer period, you’ll want to check the timing of your departure or arrival. If there may be issue with the temporary airport closure, check with your airline for potential alternatives.
