American Express has hugely improved the Marriott Bonvoy credit card but the offer ends on 31 August 2021.

Firstly, the welcome bonus has doubled from 20,000 to 40,000 Marriott Bonvoy points after spending £3,000 in the first three months of cardmembership. Those 40,000 points are valued at £280 based on TPG’s latest valuation of Bonvoy points.

Alternatively, these points could be converted to Avios at a rate of 3 to 1, so 40,000 Bonvoy points would become 13,333 Avios.

That’s enough Bonvoy points for a free peak night at a Category 4 property, or an off-peak night in a Category 5 property, which includes, among many others:

  • St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel London
  • Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott Hotel
  • Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa, Edinburgh
  • Castillo Hotel Son Vida, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Mallorca
  • The Westin Dragonara Resort, Malta

The second limited-time improvement is that successful applicants will receive Gold Elite status in the Marriott Bonvoy programme until February 2023, rather than the Silver status the card typically offers.

Gold Elite members can enjoy the following when staying at thousands of Marriott Group properties around the world:

  • 25% more points earned on each Marriott hotel stay
  • 250 or 500 Bonvoy extra points as a welcome bonus each stay, depending on the property
  • Space-available room upgrades
  • 2 p.m. late checkout, subject to availability

As always, you’ll earn 2 Marriott Bonvoy points per £1 spent on everyday purchases. This increases to a solid 6 Bonvoy points per £1 spent with participating Marriott group hotels typically.

You will also receive a free night award each year when you spend £25,000 on the Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card, which can be redeemed for a Marriott stay of less than 35,000 points per night.

Representative example: This card has an APR of 41.6% (variable) and a purchase rate of 24.5% (variable) with an assumed credit limit of £1,200.

Remember the American Express welcome bonus restrictions. The good news is that even if you don’t qualify for the welcome bonus, you will still receive Gold Elite status in the Bonvoy programme if you are approved for this card before 31 August 2021.

You might think a card with a gold-level hotel status and a big welcome bonus comes with a huge annual fee. The annual fee for this card is a reasonable £75.

The value of the welcome bonus covers this annual fee many times over and, depending on where you stay, you can receive a £75 room upgrade complimentary with your Gold Elite status with just one hotel stay.

This offer is for successful applications on or before 31 August 2021, and you can apply for the Marriott Bonvoy American Express card here.
