Amex has hugely improved the Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card for a limited time only, and there’s a clever way to pick up elite hotel status.

The welcome bonus has doubled from 20,000 to 40,000 Marriott Bonvoy points after spending £3,000 in the first three months of cardmembership. Those 40,000 points are valued at £280 based on TPG’s latest valuation of Bonvoy points. Alternatively, these points could be converted to Avios at a rate of 3:1, so 40,000 Bonvoy points would become 13,333 Avios.

The second limited-time improvement through 31 August 2021 is that successful applicants will receive Gold elite status in the Marriott Bonvoy programme until February 2023, rather than the usual Silver status the card usually offers.

Gold Elite members can enjoy the following when staying at thousands of Marriott Group properties around the world:

  • 25% more points earned on each Marriott hotel stay;
  • 250 or 500 Bonvoy extra points as a welcome bonus each stay, depending on the property;
  • Space-available room upgrades; and
  • 2 p.m. late checkout, subject to availability.

This card has an APR of 38.8% (variable) and a purchase rate of 22.2% (variable) with an assumed credit limit of £1,200.

Now, the American Express welcome bonus restrictions are strict. This means you would be ineligible for the welcome bonus on this card if, for example, you currently held the Preferred Rewards Gold Card from American Express.

However, the trick here is that even if you don’t qualify for the welcome bonus, you will still receive Gold Elite status in the Bonvoy programme until February 2023 if you are approved for this card.

You would still need to pay the £75 annual fee, however, if you are staying in any of the thousands of Marriott Bonvoy properties across the country or around the world, the benefits you will receive should quickly cover that annual fee especially if you value things like late checkout, room upgrades and plenty of bonus points.

If you’ve ever wanted to try out a mid-level hotel status without paying a high annual fee for The Platinum Card from American Express U.K., which also provides this status complimentary, then consider this shortcut.

This offer is for successful applications before 31 August 2021 – you can apply for the Marriott Bonvoy American Express card here.
