NYC Is Getting a New Ritz-Carlton Hotel in 2021

When Marriott International and Starwood Preferred Guest officially merge on August 18, it will be the world’s largest hotel chain. And one of the combined brand’s first new developments is going up in New York City.

Manhattan’s NoMad (that’s “North Madison” or the several blocks above Madison Square Park for the uninitiated) is receiving a new Marriott hotel in 2021. The company announced in July it has partnered with the luxury hospitality development firm Flag Luxury Group to build a Ritz-Carlton in one of NYC’s most trendy neighborhoods.

High-end hotels with a hip vibe abound in the tiny neighborhood — the NoMad Hotel, the Ace Hotel and — coming in 2019 — the Virgin Hotel are all within several blocks.

Flag Luxury Group is investing $500 million in the new Ritz-Carlton, which will be designed by Rafael Vinoly, an award-winning architect from Uruguay.  The hotel will rise more than 500 feet high and will feature 250 hotel rooms and 16 branded residences.

Renderings show that Vinoly is including lots of glass and greenery for an airy feel to the tall, sweeping structure. There will also be a rooftop bar and a large public garden and open terraces. “The building will be setback from 28th Street via a plaza and rise as a simple slab tower,” CityRealty reports. “Rows of planters will sit below full-height glass windows and there will be several accessible outdoor spaces throughout the tower.

The hotel will be located on 28th Street and Broadway — right near the Flatiron building. The hotel group says that a Ritz-Carlton in Manhattan’s Madison Square Park North Historic District will provide guests with easy access to some of the city’s top attractions.

“Thanks to buzzing restaurants and bars, unique retail and notable architecture, NoMad has become one of Manhattan’s most popular neighborhoods,” said Tony Capuano, executive vice president and global chief development officer for Marriott International. “This signing speaks to the strong demand we are experiencing for luxury hospitality and branded residences.”

The hotel’s interiors, which will include a fine-dining restaurant, a Ritz-Carlton renowned Club Lounge, a signature Ritz-Carlton Spa and fitness center, will be outfitted by the interior design firm Yabu Pushelberg, who also designed the interiors of the Four Seasons New York.

This will be Manhattan’s second Ritz-Carlton location. There is a Ritz-Carlton on Central Park, and the brand also has luxury residences in Battery Park. Excavation of the NoMad property began in late July.

Although you won’t be able to enjoy this hotel using a Ritz-Carlton Rewards credit card because the card is no longer accepting new applicants, you can apply for the recently launched Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Credit Card with its 75,000-point sign-up bonus.
