It might seem like the kids have just gone back to school, but half-term is just around the corner.

Coronavirus means ever-changing restrictions and guidelines on which countries we can visit without quarantine, so this October half-time, you may want to look closer to home.

We’ve scoured the nation — from city breaks and countryside resorts to beachfront hotels and mountain escapes — for some good deals on half-term breaks. There’s something in our top picks to suit every taste and budget.

City breaks

1. Manchester — three nights for two adults and two children from £178

Manchester is ideal for a few nights away to break up the school holidays. Better still, three nights at the Crowne Plaza Manchester City Centre will set you back as little as £178. The hotel is part of the IHG chain, so be sure to book directly through IHG’s website and sign up for the Rewards Club (if you’re not a member already) to earn points for your stay.

If you’ve got some points saved up already, it’ll cost you just 15,000 points per night.

2. Newcastle — three nights for two adults and two children from £252

With views overlooking the River Tyne and the famous Tyne Bridge, the Hilton Gateshead is a great option for a family of four to base themselves for a few nights away in the northeast. If you’re already a Hilton Honors member and have some points saved up, it’ll cost you 26,000 points per night for this stay.

Cornwall

3. Newquay — seven nights for two adults and two children from £735

Cornwall is a firm favourite for all the family. At the Atlantic Reach Resort, the garden terrace properties provide you with lots of space. Not only that, but there are plenty of activities to keep the little ones entertained.

Prices for a seven-night trip over October half-term start at around £735. To book, head to the Atlantic Reach Resort website.

The Cotswolds

You’d probably think that a week-long visit to the Cotswolds during October half-term would be ridiculously expensive. Well, it doesn’t have to be. Of course, you could spend thousands on lavish spa hotels, but ultimately, all you need is a comfortable base, as most of the time, you’ll be out exploring the beautiful countryside.

Here are a couple of options at opposite ends of the scale.

4. Cheltenham — seven nights for two adults and two children from £381

Cheltenham in Gloucestershire is a small town right on the edge of the Cotswolds. You can base yourself here at an IHG Holiday Inn Express for the entire half-term week — with breakfast included — from a total of just £381 or 15,000 points per night.

5. Stow-on-the-Wold — one week for two adults and two children from £1,820 including breakfast

At the other end of the scale, The Stag at Stow, also in Gloucestershire, is a stunning boutique family favourite in the heart of the Cotswolds. There are no family rooms here, which means you’d have to pay for two rooms. Breakfast is included and apparently, it’s amazing. Prices start from £1,820 for two adults and two children staying in two rooms over half-term for seven nights.

Scotland

We love Scotland, and we think it’s the perfect place for a family holiday this October half-term — and it doesn’t have to break the bank.

6. Edinburgh — three nights for two adults and two children from £210 including breakfast

The Holiday Inn Express, Edinburgh offers a good rate for a family of four this October half-term. It’s slightly more compact than the Crowne Plaza in Manchester, as instead of two beds, it’s one bed and a sofa bed — but breakfast is included as a consolation. It’ll cost £210 for the three nights, or if you’d rather pay with points, it’ll cost you 18,333 points per night.
