After being added to the U.K.’s coveted green list last Friday, Portugal has on Friday finally announced they will welcome British tourists from 00:00 on Monday, 17 May.
The Portuguese Government had officially extended its “state of public calamity” through to 30 May, and it was feared this would continue to ban all foreign tourists, including those from the U.K.
The Independent reports that British travellers can enter the country for non-essential reasons from 17 May on the presentation of a negative PCR test for COVID-19, taken no more than 72 hours before their flight to Portugal departs. This decision comes after the worldwide travel ban is finally lifted after months of U.K. lockdown. Portugal’s tourism industry is heavily reliant on British visitors, particularly in the southern Algarve region – more than three million Brits visited the country in 2019.
An exception to existing restrictions had already been announced for British football fans keen to cheer on their team. The UEFA Champions League final between Manchester City FC and Chelsea FC is expected to be held in Porto on 29 May, one day before the current “state of public calamity” is currently scheduled to end. Up to 12,000 fans are likely to be permitted to attend the game in person. Portuguese Cabinet Minister Official Ms Vieira da Silva advised that these fans would be subject to various restrictions to be confirmed, including strict arrival and departure times, socially distanced seating and COVID-19 testing.
Passengers arriving in the U.K. from green list destinations are no longer subject to quarantine, either at home or in a managed hotel quarantine though will need a pre-booked PCR test.
