Mariner of the Seas, the 15-year-old Royal Caribbean ship, has had a complete revamp. The $120 million project has one final goal: Get millennials on board.
Millennials, adults between the ages of 22 and 37, according to Pew Research, encompass a range of individuals that we would expect are just becoming financially independent to those having a significant amount of disposable income or anywhere in between.
According to Royal Caribbean President and CEO Michael Bayley, millennials are interested in traveling in shorter, more frequent trips than the generations before them. That is the trend Royal Caribbean is targeting with the four-night weekday and three-night weekend trips from Miami to the Bahamas on the Mariner of the Seas. The new and improved cruise is already bookable, and its first route after its renovation embarked on Monday.
On top of the routes, Royal Caribbean is hoping to bring in the typically cruise-averse generation by adding lots of new amenities to the ship. The Mariner of the Seas will now have an escape room set in a time-traveling observatory, a virtual reality trampoline experience, Italian dining by Chef Jamie Oliver and an intergalactic laser tag game.
The $120 million millennial ship is part of a larger $900 million refurbishment project Royal Caribbean is conducting on 10 of its ships over the next four years.
As someone who belongs to the spunky Gen-Z (just like the ship itself), I’m compelled by the new additions. They seem like necessary updates to keep up with the world that’s changing around us, and they might just be setting a new standard for the amenities that cruises will offer from now on.
