From today, fully vaccinated holidaymakers can continue travelling freely to Spain as tourists, but they must provide proof of a final COVID-19 vaccine does or booster shot administered within 14 to 270 days of entering the country.

British travellers, over the age of 12, with vaccination certificates older than 270 days will be considered unvaccinated under the new rule changes from 1 February and not be permitted to enter Spain.

What that means is, U.K. travellers (or visitors from any country) will not be allowed into Spain if their most recent COVID-19 vaccine shot happened more than 270 days ago. For visitors who have only had two jabs, and the second came 270 days or older, they will need a booster jab taken more than 14 days before their arrival date.

Spain is the latest European destination to require visitors to be boosted for COVID-19, aligning with the European Union’s recent decision to validate the EU Digital COVID Certificate for 270 days after the holder’s first dose.

From Spain’s official tourism website:  “The certificate must have been issued by the competent authorities of the country of origin at least 14 days after the date of administration of the last dose of the full course of vaccination, as long as the final dose of that course of vaccination was no more than 270 days ago. From that time, the certificate must show the administration of a booster vaccination.”

Additionally, all passengers arriving in Spain by air or sea, including those transiting, must complete an online health form prior to departure. After finishing the form, you should receive a QR code to present at boarding and upon arrival when passing through airport health controls. Proof of recovery from COVID-19 is not eligible to be used to enter Spain.

If you are fully vaccinated, however, you will not currently need to take a test before travelling to Spain from the U.K or after landing in Spain.

In December, the European Commission, the governing body of the EU, announced rules related to intra-EU travel to restrict the validity of the EU Digital COVID Certificate to people vaccinated for COVID-19 within the past nine months or 270 days.

As long as they hold a valid vaccination passport, fully vaccinated EU Digital COVID Certificate holders will be able to cross the border freely within the 27 member EU states without a negative COVID-19 test come February.

The passport also allows travellers to seamlessly visit more than 60 countries and territories across five continents which are part of the system. No such equivalent exists in the U.S.

Other EU nations, including France, the Netherlands and Switzerland, have preemptively implemented their own booster requirements.
