We’ve been asking to hear your travel success and mistake stories to both celebrate and help our TPG U.K. community — even if you’re not travelling right now.

This week, Helen wrote in following her attempt to match her British Airways status to TAP Portugal status.

“I thought I’d let you know how my TAP Portugal status match attempt has gone. It hasn’t exactly gone swimmingly, and I may not even get a chance to use a Star Alliance airline in the next 12 months due to COVID-19 (let alone try and retain that Star Alliance Gold status!).

I’ve now given up, as it’s just become too much of a hassle.

There seems to be some serious bugs in TAP’s MiIes&Go website and app, which has made logging into through Facebook hard. It’s sent me emails with broken links and unclear information about how to validate the status match through subscribing to its mileage purchase programme. I was only begrudgingly prepared to do this given I’d getting an “upgrade” from British Airways Silver to Star Alliance Gold. The programme has also been slow to respond to emails, hasn’t answered questions properly and just repeats the same unclear information over and over.

This all could just be teething problems, but I find it hard to believe the programme will convert many business travellers in the long run unless it can sort out all these problems.

Thanks for the status match offer tip though, would have been a great thing to have under normal circumstances, and maybe under normal circumstances I’d have persevered further!”

Status matches can be a great way for airlines to attract new loyalty, as well as regular travellers to start enjoying benefits on a new airline (or alliance) they might not have flown before, rather than starting from scratch. Unfortunately, TAP has made this status match experience a hassle for those potentially loyal passengers.

TPG’s Christian Kramer, a long-time top-tier member of British Airways Executive Club programme has also struggled with this TAP status match offer, being repeatedly stuck being asked for a Portuguese VAT number in the application process, which he does not possess.

If you manage to successfully match to TAP Miles&Go elite status, please let me know so I can help Helen and other readers do the same!
