Stinky Fruit on Plane Causes Hour-Long Flight Delay

In today’s episode of bizarre reasons for flight delays, stinky fruit pushed back the takeoff time of a flight in Indonesia by an hour.

Aboard the domestic Sriwijaya Air flight from Jakarta (CGK) to Bengkulu (BKS) on Monday, passengers revolted against the sharp stench of two tonnes of durian fruit that had been stored in the cargo. Durian fruit is perhaps known best for its pungent smell. It’s odor, as food writer Richard Sterling put it, is “best described as turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock.” According to Newsweek, the smell of the durian was so nauseating to passengers aboard the plane that some “almost came to blows” with the crew.

Despite being banned from public transportation in Thailand, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore for its stench, durian is actually permitted on airplanes as long as it follows regulations. “It’s not illegal to carry durians in a flight as long as it is wrapped properly in accordance with flight regulations [and] carried inside the hold,” said Sriwijaya Air senior corporate communications manager Retri Maya to the Jakarta Post. “Many airlines do this.”

Even though the regulations were met with the pungent cargo aboard the Sriwijaya Air flight, passengers still were adamant about the unbearable odor. Amir Zidane, who was aboard the flight, said on Facebook: “When I entered the plane, I could already smell the scent of durian. I complained to the stewardess but they told me to just fill up a complaint form. I yelled at the other passengers ‘Who on this plane wants to fly?’ They all chanted back ‘not us!!'”

Eventually, crew members gave into the passenger protests and unloaded the two tonnes of durian fruit from the cargo. The flight took off an hour behind schedule due to the stinky delay.
