A welcome surprise from British Airways: TPG reader success story

This week, our awesome TPG UK Facebook Lounge moderator Matt shared some great news about his British Airways status plans:
“I had been planning to reach British Airways Executive Club Silver status this year through strategic flights booked with British Airways and its partner airlines. Of course, COVID-19 changed those plans completely and I thought the higher status was now impossible this year without the necessary travel.
I emailed British Airways via its Executive Club online contact form explaining the situation and including the booking reference PNR numbers for the booked flights, telling them that the only reason I was not taking these flights was they kept being cancelled.
I received an email in reply earlier today, which really brought a smile to my face. They told me that they had taken into consideration all of my cancelled bookings and decided to upgrade me to Executive Club Silver status. I was definitely was not expecting this and it goes to show that if you ask nicely and you lay out all of the facts, you never know what might occur.
Thank you British Airways, this made me glad to be a loyal customer!”
We all know that 2020 has proven a very unusual one for travellers worldwide. Status extensions offered by major loyalty programmes have been very welcome, though if you were planning to reach a higher status this year through status running or lots of additional travel, you likely had those plans disrupted.
Don’t expect it, but it can be worth contacting your loyalty programme to explain your situation. Some programmes are being more flexible in how they look at customer loyalty and you may be able to achieve your status goals after all.
