The ‘Flying Bum’ Is Coming Back With a Luxury Redesign

The largest aircraft in the world, the Airlander 10 blimp, underwent a series of unfortunate events upon its conception. But now, the slow giant is trying to make a better name for itself with the release of luxury interior renderings and an overall rebranding.
Back in 2016, the massive aircraft took its first flight, and by its second, it crashed onto its nose shortly after takeoff. Then, in 2017, it completely deflated following a successful flight. Worse, it earned the nickname Flying Bum because of its plush, round behind.
The Airlander 10, originally intended to be used for carrying cargo and military surveillance, is now pushing toward a new reputation. Beyond general functionality, Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV) is hoping to make the Flying Bum into an opulent experience involving lots of glass (on the floors, too), bedrooms, bars and modern bean bags. Plus, it’s modular, so its layout can be changed.

Because the 302-foot beast can only travel up to 91 mph, HAV is hoping to make three-day flights into a bucket list-worthy excursions. It’s all in the name of “luxury expeditionary tourism.”
“Air travel has become very much about getting from A to B as quickly as possible,” Stephen McGlennan, HAV’s CEO, told the BBC. “What we’re offering is a way of making the journey a joy.”
